Desk-based Assessment of Listed Buildings, West Yorkshire

AOC Archaeology Group undertook a desk-based assessment of a manorial farm complex known as Low Hall in Horsforth, West Yorkshire in advance of proposals to alter agricultural buildings for the provision of office accommodation. The proposed development area included the listed building known as Low Hall farmhouse in addition to listed cottages and outbuildings associated with the adjacent former Stanhope residence of Low Hall.

Documentary research undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group provided evidence for residence at Low Hall from the 12th century. Map regression coupled with further documentary research allowed AOC to document the development of the Low Hall Farm complex from the 17th century and highlighted the complex of buildings as an interesting example of the development of a manorial farm.

In consultation with our client, White Young Green, and the archaeological adviser to the local authority, West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service, AOC Archaeology Group formulated a mitigation strategy involving historic building recording of the farm buildings prior to their alteration and archaeological monitoring of ground breaking works that may uncover remains of the earlier residential complex.

The works undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group allowed for the proposed development to proceed whilst also ensuring that this important complex was accurately recorded prior to its alteration thus mitigating against any loss of information by the new development.
