The Lochrin Basin Dig

The construction of the Union Canal began in 1818 and during its life it transported people and goods between Edinburgh and Glasgow, via Falkirk where it was connected to the Forth and Clyde Canal. Today it provides recreational opportunities for runners, walkers, cyclists and rowers.

The forthcoming archaeological excavation of Lochrin Basin, one of the original three ports in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh, will provide an insight into the construction of the Union Canal and the lives of the people who lived and worked on it.

An on-site exhibition and guided tours of the excavation will be open to the public in summer 2008  (opening times and dates to be confirmed).
